Body type #3, Hips & Thighs

I pray you had a blessed Christmas Holiday celebration last weekend. With last minute shopping, baking, and wrapping, I took the Friday off last week to finish Christmas errands.

Today, the focus is on the hips, thighs, and derriere.  When you gain weight, do you tend to gain primarily in your hips, thighs, & derriere?  If so, you probably also have a narrow waist & shoulders that are narrow or medium in width.  You may also have a smaller bustline.  If this description fits your body type, Shari Braendel (author of Good Girls don't have to Dress Bad) would categorize you as a "d" body type.

Here are some fashion suggestions for you:
  • look for pants that have a flared leg (the flare helps to balance your hips)
  • stay away from skinny jeans or ones that are narrow at the bottom (they only serve to place more focus on your hips & thighs)
  • get to know a tailor (they can be a lifesaver when it comes to having pants altered)
  • speaking of buying pants, look for ones that fit you in the hips and then have them altered in the waist so they compliment your narrow waist
  • keep patterns on the top half of your body (this will help draw attention up toward your beautiful face)
  • short jackets look cute on you
  • stay away from jackets or tops that are too long (stop at the widest part of your hips, thighs-it only draws attention to this area)
  • wear fun necklaces and earrings to draw attention back up toward the face
A few words about tailors: 
Clothing makers are trying to offer varying styles and fits for women now days but you will still need to be open to using a tailor to get the right fit.  I would suggest talking to friends and co-workers to see if they would recommend a local tailor.  Ask questions like: How much do they charge for various alterations? What is their turnaround time? What types of alterations can they do?

After locating a tailor, try taking one or two garments to them initially.  Then assess for yourself how happy you are with the results.  When purchasing a new garment that you already know needs to be tailored to get the best fit, LEAVE the tags on the garment until you take it to the tailor.  Occasionally, there will be alterations that will cost too much for a tailor to do.  It is best for you and the tailor to decide that together.  When you leave the tags on the garment and keep your purchase receipt, you always have the ability to return the garment back to the store if you and your tailor decide it would be too costly to make the alterations you want for the perfect fit.
